Can Cellphones Help Fight Identity Theft?

March 17th, 2009 Rob Douglas

Saul Hansell, on his blog at The New York Times, has an interesting piece today asking Can Cellphones Help Fight Identity Theft?

I hate my SecurID, but I’m starting to think that all of us are going to need to get them.

For those of you who don’t work for security-conscious corporations, a SecurID is a little LED display that goes in your wallet or on your keychain, that flashes a different six digit number every minute or so. You need to enter that number, along with a user name and password, to get into some computer systems.

Could a cellphone app do that for us?

I started to think about this after reading Brad Stone’s post about how some user IDs and passwords from Comcast customers have been found online. Walk with me through the logical implication of these trends.
